What To Wear?

Tonight I am going to the VIP Opening Party for CB2 on M Street in Georgetown.  In case you are unfamiliar with the brand, it's Crate and Barrel's more modern sister.  If Crate and Barrel were the Charlotte, think of CB2 as the Carrie.  Anywho-- the weather has been crazy here the past few days, one minute it's 85 and sunny and suddenly a monsoon tears through the DC area.  So, last night when I checked the weather, I had to create a Plan B for my outfit. So much for my saucy sundress, it's going to be in the 60's tomorrow.

Here's what I came up with:

Dress- Zara (Fall 2010)
Clutch- Banana Republic (in stores now!)
Necklace- House of Harlow
Shoes-Charlotte Rousse  (I think I paid like $18 for these babies last Fall...)

Happy Birthday Mom!

Today my mother would have been 66 years old.    Ironic that the Royal Wedding falls on her birthday, as she passed away on the Anniversary of Princess Diana's death (which coincidentally was also our Wedding Anniversary.)

I believe in the significance of numbers.  It is so strange to me that so many events fall on the same day.  For instance-- August 31--- the anniversary of our engagement, wedding and Mom's death.  Yes, the first two of those events were totally within our control-- but I still think that there is something symbolic here.   As Mike likes to tell me-  "You are the only one I know who has an astrologer and a clairvoyant..."  Yes, I am weird that way.

Whatever the significance--Happy Birthday Mom!

A Plethora of Paisley.

I simply adore paisley. Originally introduced by India, the teardrop shaped pattern is actually named after Paisley, Scotland.  In the 19th century European production of the pattern particularly in the Scottish town from where the pattern takes it's name.  Scottish soldiers brought home patterned scarves from India.  They were so wildly popular that the East India Company imported more.  Soon the pattern was mass-produced and the rest is history.

Here are a plethora of ways to add some paisley into your life:

Prayer For a Daughter.

Tina Fey might be the funniest woman alive. This excerpt of her new book Bossy Pants perfectly depicts motherhood and the irony of delayed gratitude.

First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.
May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.
When the Crystal Meth is offered, May she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.
Guide her, protect her
When crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring
Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.
Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels.
What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit.
May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.
Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen. Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.
O Lord, break the Internet forever, That she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed.
And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.
And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back.
“My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.
Amen.

A Marriage Made In Heaven.

Sunday is a special day marked on my calendar because two of my favorite brands are coming together.

Calypso St. Barth has designed a line of clothing and home goods that will be sold in Target stores starting May 1.   Items are all below $79.99-- quite a change from their usual price point.   These babies will sell out quickly, so get them while they are hot!

Watermelon Salad.

I can taste summer in the air... Literally.  Now that the weather is warming up, all of that fantastic summer produce is just right for the picking. Last weekend, we grilled out and brought some of our summer favorites out of retirement.  Here is one that is always a crowd-pleaser.  People ask me for the recipe, and it's so simple, it' embarrassing.  I even buy the pre-sliced watermelon to save time.  Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

  • 5 lbs. watermelon
  • 1/2 large red onion
  • 10 mint leaves, chopped
  • 5 oz. crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS
1.) Slice watermelon into bite-sized pieces.
2.) Slice onion into thin strings
3.) Add watermelon, onions and mint into a large bowl
4.) Whisk together oil and vinegar and salt and pepper.
5.) Pour dressing over salad
6.) Add feta right before serving and toss.
