Trim it Out.

I seem to be all about trim this week (its all in the details!) Adding a custom trim to a pillow is like adding a pair of designer heels to the perfect ensemble. It takes everything up a notch.

In looking for the perfect jacquard for a project, I came across the most amazing online trim wholesaler and couldn't wait to share it with all of you. Here are some of my favorites:

DIY Rast Project Update.

I received many emails about my little project in the garage. Here is the current status.

With a little help from my friends at Duron, I sanded those babies down and applied a few thin coats of oil-based polyurethane. I think it may have done the trick. The down side is that it takes FOREVER to dry. If you try this project yourself, here are a few tips:

1.) Make sure that you sand in between coats... I learned that the hard way.

2.) Prime it, spray one coat of spray paint to build a base, then roll on the next layer of paint.

3.) Don't do this project when it is 26 degrees outside.

As you can see my O'verlays arrived and they were much thinner than I expected, but I think that will be a good thing. Also, I was under the impression that they were wood... Not the case. They are more like a waxy foam board material.

I sanded them down (on top of our trashcan, I was running out of space another reason to wait until Spring!)

Then I sprayed them with a metallic gold paint. I love Krylon.

And now it's all drying. Tonight I will assemble them.

Fashion Friday: Loving Leopard.

I adore animal prints. Leopard and Zebra are at the top of my list. I love to rock my Wildcat blouse from J. Crew. ( Sold out, #1 below.)

Whenever I wear it, Mike calls me Peg Bundy. So, it got me to thinking that there is a lot of tasteful leopard out there, but there is even more not-so-tasteful leopard. First, let's take a look at leopard done right.

This is obviously leopard gone wrong.

Here are some tips to get it right:

Leopard print clothing should not be tight.
Stay away from spandex, rayon and velour.
Leopard print is a statement. Don't make too many statements in one outfit.
Stick to one leopard print piece per outfit. (Steer clear of matching shoes, handbag, etc.)
For a more updated look, mix leopard print with bright fun colors, think green, blue, orange, pink.
Stay away from leopard athletic wear.
Everything in moderation.

It was right around this post in 2010 that I bought the bar car that you see in the picture below. Although it will look much cuter once it is styled, I am thinking of selling this one and buying a new, more substantial bar cart. (This is what drives my husband crazy about me... He: 1.) Sees no point in a bar cart in the first place (he just grabs a beer from the fridge.) and 2.) Can't understand why this perfectly good bar cart won't do. He is convinced that I am on a mission to bankrupt us.

Anywho... There are so many beauties out there. I love them all, so much more than mine. Sigh.

A Spotty Weekend.

Our living room is virtually empty after Craig's Listers came and bought our old furniture.

I have spent the last two weekends working on a pair of DIY Rast dressers for the living room. After buying a cart full of paint and primer at the Depot, it was time to get started.

See that little Spray Grip in the cart? Best $2.95 I ever spent. Last weekend was all about priming.

Every. Little. Piece.

This weekend, I froze my a$$ off painting them in the garage. I hope it wasn't all in vein. Due to the cold temperatures, I am afraid the paint job is a little spotty. They still need a few more coats, but I either need to wait until it warms up or get an industrial space heater. The paint should dry clear and smooth in warmer temperatures. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one.

In happier news, I received my agate magnets that were on backorder since Christmas. I can't wait to show you all what I have in store for them!

I Switched it Up.

So after a family vote (it was tied... 2 and 2...but my vote was weighted. ;)) I decided to switch up the black couch in our living room for green. It's been ordered and on it's way, so there's no going back now! There will be lots of green in the adjoining dining room to balance it all out. The best part is that the couch is from Ikea, so if I get sick of the green, I can just order a black slipcover!

Fashion Friday: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Last weekend, we had an all-too-rare date night. Dinner and a movie. It was Mike's turn to pick a movie. So, we went to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I have not read the book, and was not very familiar with the premise of the movie. However, I will tell you, it was phenomenal. Albeit graphic and quite disturbing, I highly recommend it. For those of you who have yet to see it, or read the book, Lisbeth Salander is an investigator who is misunderstood and has been a victim of the system that should have protected her. She is a woman scorned by rape, abuse and neglect. She chooses to take on an unsolved case that involves the violent rape and murders of multiple women. Throughout the movie you grow to adore and admire this heroine. She's a kick-ass, take no prisoners hell-raiser. My kind of girl.

That being said, I see Lisbeth Salander's style hitting the runways.. hard. In fact, H & M has already created a limited edition line for the movie. The brand received much criticism including an open letter from a rape survivor slamming the company for it's decision to glamorize the face of sexual violence. While I know this is a difficult subject, I say we celebrate women who fight for the welfare of others, just as we have the many women before us. As the mother of two girls, I loved the fact that there was finally a leading lady who was not a 36-28-34" bombshell in heels. She went to the beat of her own drum, and she didn't give a sh%$ what other people thought. She did not let her abusers define her. This character is so much more than the horrific events that she suffered, and for that, I say we celebrate you, Lisbeth Salander.

All too often, designers fail to enhance what can be one of the most interesting elements of a room- the ceiling. As you can see from our home, the ceiling is one of the most important features in some of our favorite spaces.

My Living Room Project.

Last week I showed you all my beloved God Bless Our Pad pillow that I had made from a needlepoint that I found on Craigslist. I had mentioned that we have some exciting things in the works for our living room...Here is what it looked like a few years ago. Clearly I was in to cottage florals.

That sofa was the last piece of furniture from Mike's bachelorhood.

All of the upholstery was from our old townhouse, I had the chair and window treatments made before we even got married. The wall color in the living room was chosen by the original owners of our house. I chose the red in the dining room- Drama Red by Behr. I still love that color.

Here are the plans for our new living room...

While I hesitate to show you all the picture of what it looks like right now, after so many of you mentioned how you loved to follow the design process of Lou's room, I decided to unveil this train-wreck of a room.

So many things in this room will be 86'ed.. The skirted table, the sofa, the ugly throw pillows (not the GBOP pillow, of course) will all be going.

The honeycomb mirror over the piano will be moving upstairs in our hallway, to be replaced by my Louis Vuitton dumpster find from our trip to Charleston last summer. I have finally unwrapped her and now need to figure out how the hell to hang her.

Here are the HIDEOUS chairs that I bought off of Craig's List. They will be reupholstered in this delicious turquoise linen.

As you can see, the living room and dining room are connected (no wall.)

So I tried to unify the space with some custom curtains that I had hand-painted by Corinne Marlow, who also painted the stripes in Lou's room. I love the color. I searched for months for the perfect yellow and I found it.

I told Corinne what I wanted and she handmade the stencil herself.

The only regret that I have is that they are linen and wrinkle quite a bit.

Right now we have 12 dining room chairs (two different sets) all of which are being sold and replaced with something very exciting.

Those of you who have been following Kiki's List for a while may remember this post on a Craig's List Score of a lifetime.

After seeing this picture in Lonny magazine in the Summer of 2010, I became obsessed with finding a pillow like this and quickly realized that they are not available. There was a framed needlepoint from 1977 that was available for $10. It looked a little something like this...

After $7 of fabric from JoAnne's and a down pillow form, she's now a gem that we will keep forever.

Her home is in our living room, where there are a lot of exciting changes taking place. Stay tuned!

That being said, I am taking this time around the holidays to take it easy and spend time with my family. During this period of renewal and rebirth, this Pinterest find could not have come at a better time.

Most of you know by now that pink is my all-time favorite color. Last week when we went to pick out our Christmas tree I was beyond tempted to buy a pink tree for the girls. Today I'd like to feature a label that I feel is under appreciated; Madewell. In case you are unaware, this is the little sister of J Crew. J Crew companies opened stores in 2008 under the Madewell label offering simpler fashions at 20-30% less than J. Crew prices. I am a big fan. Here are a few of my pics from their current line-up.

Last month C. Wonder opened up their Flagship store in Soho. These pictures make me want to hop right on the Acela STAT.

Amazing, right? It's kinda Jonathan Adler meets Kate Spade meets H & M. At a whopping 7,200 square feet (in NYC no less) this retail mecca hits a lower price point than you would expect. The designs are preppy yet fun, punchy yet sophisticated.
